Well, for what it's worth, I'm sorry you went through that. Kids don't deserve to be treated that way.

[Maul said gruffly. He saw people feeling sorry for him as being like pity and he hated pity.]

What happened to me was horrific. But I survived. I always survive.

Well, I don't think there's too many people around here who are going to underestimate your strength - or your ability to survive through difficult odds.

No, that has been proven clearly enough. Yet there still appear to be some who underestimate the extent to which I will retaliate when they try anything against me.

[There was a lot less of them these days but occasionally some little lemming gravely underestimated the amount to which Maul would retaliate if provoked, which as everyone who had been in Trench already knew would be to a legendary degree.]

Uh... yeah, well, you don't have to worry about me making that mistake. I'm a little surprised that your reputation doesn't. You know. Proceed you a lot more there, given the whole...

[Willow gestures vaguely in the air.]

Well. The whole everything, I guess.

[Maul snorted derisively.]

There will always be idiots with big mouths and more impulse issues than common sense in their brains. Perhaps they should add me to one of those informational guides people put together for newcomers. Just one sentence: 'Beware Darth Maul.'

I think you might enjoy that a little too much.

[It's said lightly, half-joking. It doesn't seem like such a great idea to stroke Maul's ego by letting his reputation precede him that much.]

Can't imagine what would possibly give you that idea.

[Yes he did, one just had to look at the smirk on his face.]

No idea what would ever give anyone the impression that your ego is big enough as it is.

And every bit of it rightly earned.

[Maul really had worked hard to get to the level of skill and power he possessed. If he was arrogant, he felt it was justly deserved.]

Never said it wasn't.

[It is, of course, not lost on her how incredibly dangerous and powerful Maul is. Not after everything she's experienced with him.]

At least most people around here have realized that by now. And those that don't soon will.

[Maul was as deadly as a sand panther and just as likely to lash out at people when he felt murderous intent towards them.]

Can we have just one conversation where you don't threaten to inspire terror in everyone? Just one?

[Maul said without a single bit of hesitation.]

If I can't have respect from people, I'll take fear instead.

Maybe people would respect you more if you were a little bit nicer to them. Just saying.

I've never been nice in my whole life. The few moments I have, I got walked on all over by others, manipulated, and hurt. And pain hurts even for someone like me. Fear is a much better alternative.

Sounds like you've been maybe a little too nice to the wrong people. You can be kind to others without letting them walk all over you, you know.

All I knew for most of my life were horrible people. It's still difficult to find the good ones here.

[frogfear]

[Willow's tone turns gentle. She doesn't want it to sound like she's trying to come off too harsh.]

It might have something to do with your approach. Most people here are pretty good - or at least try to be. It's just... hard sometimes when someone comes at you with threats and stuff, you know?

I'm....not good with social interaction. [At least he could admit that much.] Being nice or compassionate doesn't come naturally to me.

[frogfear]

[Willow considers that. Given his upbringing, and his behaviour, it's not a huge stretch that social interaction is difficult. He is the same person who was confused about why it was socially unacceptable to break into houses last year to leave gifts. Even if some of the houses he was breaking into had residents whom he had previously threatened to kill.]

Well... What about being polite? Or, you know, courteous? I'm not saying you have to be all sunshine and puppies with everyone, but maybe keeping the whole 'fear me' thing down to a minimum would help?

I've tried being polite in the past but people still seem to get aggravated with me.

[Mainly because Maul was blunt to a fault and had a hard time understanding that he needed to have a little something called tact to get through conversations to keep from inadvertently insulting someone.]

Well... I guess what's considered polite can vary a little too from person to person. I mean. We've had talks before where we were okay, even after everything that's happened, right? So I mean, that shows you can get along with people. Just sometimes you have kind of a hard time with it.
